BECAUSE YOUR LAWYER DOESN’T LIKE IT WHEN YOU ADMIT THAT YOU TRY TO MURDER PEOPLE

I just want to state how fucking annoyed I am — because while I’m sure that somebody somewhere has, I have not personally seen anyone point this particular thing out — with the way that Hugo continually prefaces his history of VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN as his “pre-sobriety past.” Not only the fact that he uses a euphemism for HIS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, but also that he uses that particular euphemism. The implication is that because he had an addiction, he is not responsible for his VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. Further, he implicitly frames those of us who have a problem with his “pre-sobriety past” as actually just having an oppressive bias against people who struggle with addiction existing in the world as full human being and citizens, rather than a bias against MEN WHO COMMIT SPECIFICALLY GENDERED VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN and then position themselves as experts on feminism.

It’s an appropriation of a real fucking problem (bias and discrimination against and dehumanization of people with addictions or recovering from addictions) that people who have WAY less racial, class, and educational privilege than him are almost always the ones to deal with. And it is a purposeful diversion away from one of the real issues — HIS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN — and the fact that there is more than one issue, like a million problems from his “sober present” including lots and lots of racism, bullying, paternalism, and misogyny. It’s framing his white, male, middle-class self as yet again the victim of all kinds of oppressive forces when it could not be any more bleedingly obvious that he is the perpetrator.

Yep. All that.

Some of us don’t have the luxury of an acknowledged pre-sobriety past. We will forever be judged for our addictions. Or attorneys who thoughtfully look out for us when we don’t know when to STFU and incriminate ourselves brag about our exploits.

And honestly, ok, even if we stick to his post-sobriety past & present, he’s STILL the biggest douchefuck ever.
